White Cottage, Shenley Church End, Milton Keynes:

The development comprises the demolition of the existing three vehicle garage, to be replaced with another building to benefit the character and appearance of the conservation area. The new extension will be of two contrasting architectural forms.

Firstly, in line with the existing house, a single storey brick building with a matching tiled roof was proposed. This was designed in a form extruded sympathetically from the existing house, but lowered at both ridge and eaves levels. This traditional looking part of the building will contains a new lounge, a master bedroom suite and a home office.

Secondly, to the east of the above, a contemporary flat roofed glass walled extension was proposed, comprising a breakfast area, stair and garden room (part of the sitting room), as a means of connecting the new extension to the existing cottage. The ridge level of the traditional part of the extension has been designed to be lower in level than the existing house so as to remain both subservient in appearance to the rest of the house and lower in scale. It is located to the back of White Cottage, so it will be hardly noticeable by the local residents or the public and will be of negligible visual impact to the area.
