Bay Tree House, Paulerspury:

The brief for this project was to extend the existing house to create additional open plan living space, a study, a wine cellar and bedroom space. Improved privacy from the neighbours was also a requirement.

The scheme is comprised of three elements. The existing kitchen is converted to a double bedroom suite incorporating a wet room. The existing house becomes the sleeping zone. The existing formal living area is retained. A new timber framed and timber clad extension to the rear is comprised of a study, a larger informal dining area, the kitchen, pantry and utility areas. A wine cellar is also included. All three parts of the house are connected by a new glazed link which opens onto a central courtyard with planting and patio achieving “outside in” living.

With sustainability in mind, the new windows are triple glazed incorporating a low-E solar control coating. The extended eaves on the Eastern façade allows passive solar control. The scheme includes high levels of thermal insulation, wind tightness and air tightness. External materials include vertical timber cladding, a zinc roof to the monopitch roof, slate coloured Sarna flat roofing, new slate to the existing pitched roofs and replacement windows.
