Balcony and Oriel Window, Albaran, Harlington, Beds:

The brief for this project was to modify the south elevation of the existing mock Tudor style house in a way that would modernise it and allow views of the famous National Trust owned hillside, Sharpenhoe Clappers, to be admired from inside and outside.

The scheme is comprised of two elements:

A new balcony located over the existing
garage/store, and

A new oriel window installed within the gable end
of the existing south elevation.

The steel balustrading to the balcony incorporates a memorial triptych of water jet cut steel artworks by artist Julian Stocks. The Oriel window is of cantilevered steel framed construction with timber framing incorporated to support the finishes. The windows are triple glazed incorporating a low-E solar control coating.

The bench seating allows excellent views from the first floor landing of the hillside opposite. The flat roof has extended eaves on all three sides to allow passive solar control. The walls to the Oriel window are finished in Permarock insulated render system. The existing panels of white render adjacent were made good to match and thereby provide a unified appearance to the whole of the gable end.
